Honest review of the BMW M3 Competition — how it drives, what breaks, and whether buying a used performance BMW makes sense in Central PA.

BMW M3 Competition Review — Is a Used BMW Worth It?

What the M3 Competition is

The BMW M3 Competition (G80 chassis, 2021 and later) is the high-performance version of the F-generation 3-Series sedan, developed by BMW M GmbH in Garching. Powertrain is the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, producing 503 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque from 2,750 to 5,500 rpm. In G80 Competition trim, that engine mates exclusively to an 8-speed ZF-sourced automatic transmission (no manual is offered in Competition — the manual is available only on base G80 M3). xDrive all-wheel drive became an available option on the M3 Competition for 2022 and later model years.

Peak numbers on the spec sheet: 0–60 in 3.8 seconds (RWD) or 3.4 seconds (xDrive), quarter mile in the mid-11-second range, top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited) or 180 mph with the M Driver's Package.

This is not a rational purchase. It is a driving experience. Understanding that up front is step one.

How it drives on Central PA roads

The first time you take an M3 Competition down route 897 through the Blue Mountains on a dry summer morning, you understand why people put up with everything else this car asks of them.

Silly quick — 0–60 in the low 3-second range with launch control on an xDrive car. But the pace isn't the story. The way it responds is. Steering weight is heavier than any mainstream sedan; there's real communication back through the wheel about front-tire load. Brakes are stronger than anything you'd actually use on public roads (the optional carbon-ceramics are literally overkill outside a track). Chassis balance in a corner is remarkable — this car rewards good technique and punishes lazy inputs.

The 10-mode M Traction Control system (adjustable in 10 discrete slip levels on RWD models) is a genuine driver-training tool. Set it at 5 for a spirited backroad drive, 8 for a wet-weather commute, off for a track day.

Ride quality in Comfort mode is livable — the M-tuned adaptive dampers actually soften up. In Sport Plus mode the car becomes brittle on Lebanon County's rougher back roads and county-line transitions. This is a car that shines on smooth curvy roads (route 897, route 501 north of Bethel, route 322 east of Hershey) and asks for real concessions everywhere else — including any PA road under construction, which in 2026 is roughly half of them.

The S58 engine — what makes it special

The S58 twin-turbo inline-six is BMW M's current flagship engine and one of the most technically impressive production engines built anywhere. It uses a closed-deck iron-aluminum block, sodium-filled exhaust valves, dedicated M oil-cooling architecture, a dry-sump-style oil pan for RWD versions, and dual mono-scroll turbos (not twin-scroll — mono-scroll gives faster spool at the cost of maximum efficiency). It also shares its bottom end with the Toyota Supra's B58 in modified form, which is why the Supra 3.0 makes surprisingly big power on modest tuning.

Fuel is 93 octane premium unleaded — required, not recommended. Do not use 87 or 89 in an M3 unless the tank is nearly empty and 93 isn't available. The knock sensors will pull timing and reduce power to protect the engine, but repeated low-octane fills can accelerate carbon buildup on intake valves.

Real-world MPG and fuel cost

EPA rates the G80 M3 Competition at 16 city / 23 highway / 19 combined (RWD). In real-world driving in central PA: 17–20 combined depending on how you drive it, 24–25 on a steady highway cruise. Driven hard on a canyon-road morning, you can dip into the 12–14 mpg range.

Fuel cost math at $3.95/gallon for 93-octane premium (typical central PA in 2026), 8,000 miles per year at 18 combined: about $1,760/year. That's low mileage on purpose — most M3 owners have a daily driver and use the M3 for weekends. If you daily-drive it and log 12,000 miles: closer to $2,600/year.

What actually breaks on used BMWs

The reputation for expensive maintenance is earned, but exaggerated on some models. Modern BMWs are more reliable than internet forum culture suggests, but everything about them is more expensive when it does need service. On the G80 M3 specifically:

  • Coolant leaks — plastic expansion tanks and water pumps have finite lifespans on B58/S58 engines (60,000–80,000 miles is typical). $800–$1,400 to address at an independent BMW specialist.
  • Rear differential fluid — must be serviced per BMW's schedule (25,000 miles) or more often if tracked. Skip this and you're looking at a $4,000+ diff replacement.
  • Carbon buildup on intake valves — every direct-injection engine has this. Walnut blasting every 60,000 miles is standard preventive maintenance at $500–$800.
  • DCT/ZF 8-speed service — the ZF 8HP in the G80 is very reliable, but fluid service every 60,000 miles keeps it that way.
  • Tires and brakes — Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are $1,600+ a set. Brake pads and rotors are $1,500+ per axle at Munich prices, or $900+ at an independent shop with aftermarket rotors.
  • Electronics and battery drain — cars that sit for weeks without being driven can develop 12V battery drain issues. Keep a smart trickle charger connected if the car sleeps in a garage.

Budget $2,500–$4,000 per year for maintenance and consumables on an M3 driven with enthusiasm. Less if you baby it. Add another $1,000–$1,500 in years 5 and 10 for wear-item replacement (bushings, mounts, coolant hoses).

Insurance, registration, and total cost of ownership in PA

Insurance in Lebanon County for a clean 40-year-old driver with a good record on an M3 Competition: $1,800–$2,800 per year for full coverage. Younger drivers, prior claims, or any moving violations push that meaningfully higher — I've seen $4,500+/year quotes for 28-year-olds with a single speeding ticket.

PA registration is standard passenger-car rates. Inspection is standard PA inspection (annual). If the car has aftermarket exhaust or a tune, get the inspection done at a shop that's M-friendly — a couple of Lebanon-area inspectors will fail a car for a legal aftermarket exhaust simply because it's loud.

If you're financing, full coverage insurance is required — the leader dictates coverage minimums well above PA's mandatory 15/30/5 minimum. Get three insurance quotes before assuming an M3 is affordable to insure. The number can surprise you.

Central PA weather considerations

The M3 Competition on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires is genuinely dangerous below about 40°F — not "slippery," dangerous. The rubber compound goes hard, grip drops off a cliff, and the car will lose traction on cold-morning launches even in a straight line. If you plan to drive this car year-round in central PA, budget for a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires (Pirelli Sottozero 3 or Michelin Pilot Alpin 5) — that's $2,800–$3,600 for the set.

Alternatively, park the M3 from Thanksgiving to St. Patrick's Day and daily-drive something else. Many M3 owners in Lebanon and Harrisburg go this route. xDrive helps in the wet but does not substitute for winter tires on snow or ice.

Who this car is for

Someone who genuinely loves driving, understands what maintenance an M car requires, and is buying it as a passion vehicle — not as a daily commuter to save money on gas or maintenance. Someone who has a garage, a smart charger, and the discipline to do (or pay for) service on schedule. Someone who lives near roads worth using the car on.

If you want a fast, comfortable, low-drama sedan for daily use, look at a Honda Accord Touring 2.0T or a Genesis G70 3.3T — both deliver 90% of the M3's practical usability at 30% of the ownership cost. If you want a car that will make you smile every time you touch the starter button and don't mind paying for that privilege, the M3 delivers on a promise no mainstream car makes.

Should you buy used vs. new?

Absolutely used. A 3-year-old M3 Competition is often $20,000–$30,000 less than new, and the depreciation curve has flattened at that age. Buy from a seller (or dealer) with complete service records, a clean CARFAX, and — ideally — verifiable non-track use. Track use isn't a deal-breaker if the maintenance was done, but it accelerates wear on brakes, tires, suspension bushings, and rear differential internals.

What to inspect on any used G80 M3:

  • Full service history at a BMW dealer or documented independent BMW specialist.
  • Coolant condition (should be pink and clear).
  • Brake pad and rotor thickness (measure with calipers).
  • Tire age and remaining tread depth (2/32 minimum for street, 4/32 or better for winter).
  • All recall completion via BMW's owner portal.
  • Software version — BMW pushes M-specific updates that fix minor bugs.
  • Underbody condition — even 3 years of Central PA winter neglect leaves marks.

Verdict and next step

The G80 M3 Competition is one of the great modern performance sedans. It is not a car for everyone, and buying one used in central PA requires open eyes about maintenance costs, insurance, and the reality that a passion vehicle asks for passion-vehicle attention. If those trade-offs fit your life, it's an experience nothing else in this price range delivers.
